at the Philosophical Research Society in Los Angeles

Sat Oct 29th 7:00pm – 9:30pm (PDT)

featuring Olivia Olson (Adventure Time), hosted by Disney's Dan Povenmire & Swampy Marsh (Phineas & Ferb), with The Captain Danger band, spooky magic bits with Ron Lynch, Karl Herlinger’s vampire ventriloquism and more!featuring Olivia Olson (Adventure Time), hosted by Disney's Dan Povenmire & Swampy Marsh (Phineas & Ferb), with The Captain Danger band, spooky magic bits with Ron Lynch, Karl Herlinger’s vampire ventriloquism and more!

Halloween month ends, appropriately, with a literal descent into Hell hosted by multi-Emmy nominated comedy writer, author and songwriter Martin Olson whose wicked satire Encyclopaedia of Hell has been hailed as “absolutely one of the funniest books ever” by the drummer for Metallica, and “written by a man whose mind has an extra dimension” by comedy genius Steven Wright. Its sequel, The Conquest of Heaven was named one of the funniest books of all time by Inc. Magazine. Joining Martin will be his daughter Olivia Olson (the voice of Vanessa on Phineas & Ferb and Marceline the Vampire Queen on Adventure Time), and Disney Animation titans Dan Povenmire and Swampy Marsh (Phineas & Ferb, Milo Murphy’s Law and Hamster & Gretel).

Plus a wondrously grotesque sideshow of Martin’s so-called friends, including outrageous readings by comedian Mike O’Connell, spooky magic from Ron Lynch (Bob's Burgers), vampire ventriloquism from hilarious Karl Herlinger, a mind-bending monologue by comedian & art critic Christina Catherine Martinez, epic rants from madman Eddie Pepitone (The Bitter Buddha) and much, much less. We promise a night of comedic tomfoolery, satanic songcraft, and carnivalesque tastelessness!

Martin Olson, Olivia and Dan & Swampy will sign copies of Olson's satiric novels Encyclopaedia of Hell and The Conquest of Heaven following the show.”

High Holidays with Beyt Tikkun 2022; Rosh Hashanah, September 25-27th; Yom Kippur, October 4-5th, Online

“Join Us for High Holidays

Rosh Hashanah | September 25-27th on Zoom

Yom Kippur | October 4-5th on Zoom

The central message of Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur:

We can heal, repair, and transform ourselves, our society, and the life support system of planet earth.

The High Holidays offer us a time for deep, honest self-reflection. In what ways have we manifested our highest spiritual selves, both in our personal lives and in working to build a society which embodies justice, love, caring for the stranger, the powerless, the poor, the hungry, homeless, refugees, and those seeking to be respected and cared for? What have we done to protect the life-support system of the planet? Did we join with others who sought to make fundamental changes in the systems which reward selfishness and cynicism? The High Holy Days offer a structure for this self-reflection so we can become more fully embodied sparks of divine light and love. It requires that we actually engage in teshuva, transformation, and change. We are called to take responsibility for the ways in which we have treated others in less than kind ways, whether in our actions towards other individuals or in the ways in which we engage in our larger society. Where did we miss the mark and what can we do differently going forward?

Cat Zavis, Rabbi Michael Lerner, and Ami Goodman will lead us through much of the traditional high holiday prayers. And they will share reflections on God, and the connection between Jewish theology and the pressing political, social, and economic issues of our time. Ami Goodman will provide musical inspiration.”

With Bill McKibben, Letty Cottin Pogrebin, Noam Chomsky, and Cecelia Wambach

“Besides our inner transformation, we will also address:

  • The Accelerating Environmental Crisis
  • The Real Danger of Nuclear War
  • Increasing Poverty & Homelessness
  • The Criminalizing of Abortion
  • Capitalism & Selfishness
  • Israeli Assault on Palestinians
  • The Growth of Fascism and Hatred of Jews

The Hasidim taught that in difficult times like these we must let our joy fill the air, and insisted that the High Holy Days must be filled with music, dance, and love. You’ll find this energy at Beyt Tikkun services!!! ”

The After Path: A Samhain Spirit Workshop with Pam Grossman, Thursday, October 27, 2022, 8 PM–10 PM US/Eastern, Online.

“This Samhain, learn how to honor the spirits in this online workshop led by author and witch, Pam Grossman.”

This class will be recorded, and available for attendees to rewatch for one month.

The format will be webinar style with only Pam's screen visible, unless she calls for volunteering participants who may choose to turn on their audio and/or video when called on.

Due to high demand, there will be no refunds issued within seven days of the scheduled event. Thank you for understanding!

Communing with our beloved dead is possible at any moment, but this spirited season is when many believe the veil between worlds is thinnest, and contact with the otherworld most clear. Samhain, All Hallows Eve, Día de los Muertos, and Fête Gede are but a few of the holy-days celebrated at this time, and they provide moments of contemplation and connection with those we have lost.

In this visually-rich online workshop, Pam Grossman will cover various magical methods of honoring one's ancestors (including biological, chosen, or spiritual), and cover the key components for creating a practice of spirit veneration. Though this class will focus primarily on Samhain traditions, these gestures may be utilized any time throughout the year, whenever one feels called to give thanks, ask for guidance, or simply say hello to those who have crossed over.

Students will come away with everything they need to begin deepening their ancestral connections safely and lovingly – even if they have a complicated relationship with said spirits, or know very little about them. Our familiar spirits can support us, as we can support them!

This workshop is open to all, from the curious newbie to the occult devotee.”

Vast Sky Mind: Fundamentals of Nondual Meditation and Awakening with Michael Taft, from DeconstructingYourself.Org; October 17, 2022 through January 16, 2023, 8:30am–10am US/Pacific, online live.

“Nondual meditation is the ageless path of realizing the awakened mind already inside you. Join meditation teacher and author Michael Taft and learn how to do this for yourself. Taft has trained in nondual meditation techniques for over 35 years and created this course especially for people who have done other forms of meditation, but who are curious about engaging in this very different path. While generally following Buddhist understandings, this course takes a non-denominational approach that is informed by modern neuroscience and scholarship.

Whether you are new to meditation, or if you are a mindfulness meditator whose practice seems stalled, or if you have been following Michael’s guided meditation series on Youtube, if you are wanting something more—a practice that both engages with life and that can actually lead to awakening—then this course is for you.

In Vast Sky Mind, you will learn: – What the term “nondual” actually means – How to meditate on emptiness (and what “emptiness” even means) – The techniques of “effortless” meditation – How to overcome the obstacles that are blocking your realization – The history of nondual meditation worldwide – How nondual meditation is understood in Buddhist traditions such as Vajrayana and Dzogchen – Serious practice without a guru  – A system of meditation that you can stick with  – Much more”

Emblemata Nova De Secretis Naturæ

Travis Lawrence solo exhibition

Artist's reception: Friday September 2nd, 5–9pm

Exhibition dates: September 2–October 15, 2022

Through the art of printmaking, Travis Lawrence creates illustrious allegorical imagery inspired by the mythical and the arcane. Influenced by medieval alchemical manuscripts and illuminations, each symbolic print is an emblem of mystery and metaphor. The viewer is invited to explore the content of these hand-painted prints through a contemplative interaction with the represented archetypes.

“EMBLEMATA” is Lawrence’s second solo exhibit with Anno Domini.
