An introduction to the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft by Anna Björg Þórarinsdóttir, January 17, 2023, 19:30 GMT, online. But also “don’t worry if you miss it – we will send you a recording valid for two weeks the next day.”

“Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft by Anna Björg Þórarinsdóttir

The Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft is located in the Westfjords of Iceland, in a small town called Holmavik. This lecture by the director of the museum,

Anna Björg Þórarinsdóttir, will introduce you to the museum and the exhibitions. The European Witch-craze swept across Iceland in the seventeenth century, with over 200 cases and 21 executions. The Museum combines the history of magic with knowledge of magic in Iceland and how it appears in folklore. Join Anna as she talks about the Museum and the spells and objects that are on display. At the Museum, the downstairs gallery represents how magic arts lived in folklore and what people imagined could be achieved with the help of supernatural powers; the upstairs gallery shows who prosecuted and judged the witchcraft cases in Iceland. Also, hear about Jón lærði who is now considered the most significant folklorist of the 17th Century, he left behind a number of publications and drawings that shed light on the spirit of the times. Join us for an evening of Icelandic Magic.”

Seeds of Hope and Renewal, a ritual with Starhawk, in support of Diversity Scholarships, November 20, 2022, 11 am US/Pacific, online.

“Seeds of Hope and Renewal

A ritual for hope in dark times

Seeds of Hope and Renewal is a fundraiser to support Diversity Scholarships for Indigenous People and People of Color who are students and teachers with Earth Activist Training

This is the dark time of year, when winter closes in and sometimes it’s hard to keep the warm flames of hope alive. But the cold, dark ground is where seeds gestate and prepare to grow again. Some seeds can only sprout after enough coldness, roughness, fire or other disturbance. In these times when the great disturbance of climate meltdown impacts all of us, we come together to prepare for new growth. In both practical and spiritual ways. Earth Activist Training teaches permaculture–ecological design–with a grounding in spirit and a focus on organizing and activism. Come join us for both spiritual and practical inspiration. In ritual, we’ll find our own deep sources of renewal, and we’ll ground our hope with actual examples of projects from our students and teachers, that regenerate ecosystems and put into practice the skills of earth healing. Admission is by donation, proceeds go to support our diversity scholarship fund.

Date & Time: Sunday, November 20, 11:00 am PST

Location: Virtual. Zoom link provided at registration, with reminders sent before the event

Registration Required: Free, but you must register to join

By Donation, with any amount appreciated”

Yeats Impact on Irish Folklore A Critical Look at Yeats Material, with Morgan Daimler, Dec 11, 2022, Online

“A look at Yeats personal background, approach to Irish folklore, and impact , including a critical discussion of flaws in his material.”

“Yeats is renowned as a poet and author and often looked to as a source for late 19th century Irish folk beliefs thanks to his books Celtic Twilight and Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry . Yet Yeats as a source is very much a man of his time, inserting his own bias and opinions into what he recorded and freely rewriting material he collected to suit his own purposes. This discussion will focus on Yeats personal background and frame of reference in relation to the material he was recording as well as various examples where what Yeats relayed in his books is at odds with other sources of folk belief in Ireland around the same period and for decades afterwards, particularly in the Gaeltacht.”

Victor Neuburg, Magical Writer. Poet Victor Neuberg is known for his Aleister Crowley ties, but he was also an acclaimed poet: Caroline Neuberg talks with Justin Hopper, Treadwell's Bookshop, Dec 8, 2022, London, UK and online.

“Poet Victor Neuberg is known for his Aleister Crowley ties, but he was also an acclaimed poet: Caroline Neuberg talks with Justin Hopper

Victor Neuberg (1883-1940) was a British pagan writer who was part of the wider occult milieu of the early twentieth century. Though he never achieved fame, he nonetheless has a quiet but avid cult following. Neuberg is famed for his liaison with Aleister Crowley c. 1906-1914 and their joint magical workings (Choronzon / Paris), but he had his own important career in literature: writing poetry, founding Vine Press, and mentoring younger writers. Dylan Thomas even said, 'Vicky encouraged me as no one else has done'. Tonight his granddaughter Caroline Neuberg comes to Treadwell's for a lively 'on the sofa' talk with Justin Hopper to talk about Neuberg: the occult life, the writing career, the acclaimed poetry, and the pagan sensibility — he was a devotee of the god Pan. Drinks party follows.

Caroline Neuberg is joined by Justin Hopper, the editor of Obsolete Spells,  a selection of Neuburg's work and from other Vine Press books—over-the-top hymns to the Old Gods, tales from a utopian landscape, and more, most of which have been out of print for a century.”

Moina Mathers: Mistress of Magic with Geraldine Beskin at The College of Psychic Studies, November 1, 2022, 7pm (UK), online and recorded for those registered.

“Many will recognise Moina Mathers from her association with The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. In this livestream talk, Geraldine Beskin reveals that this unsung hero should be recognised for much more... including her art, which is on show in the College's Creative Spirits art exhibition!

Moina Mathers was unusual in many ways – not least having a successful marriage to a ceremonial magician, and they are rarely easy to live with! Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers was one of the three founders of The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and Moina was initiated into it, ran it, constructed the rituals and maintained a life as an artist too.

A thoroughly European childhood and a courageous nature made Moina Mathers' bohemian lifestyle one that her friends envied. Her two main companions were the remarkable Annie Horniman and Florence Farr who both also feature in this talk. One was rich and one was famous, and both had interesting friends and were mentioned in biographies.

Moina Mathers has been slightly overlooked for the last several years and Geraldine is set to redress the balance with this, the most recent of her biographical talks on Magical Women. Join us for this enlightening livestream talk on the life and magic of Moina Mathers, whose artwork can be seen in the College's Creative Spirits art exhibition.”

High Holidays with Beyt Tikkun 2022; Rosh Hashanah, September 25-27th; Yom Kippur, October 4-5th, Online

“Join Us for High Holidays

Rosh Hashanah | September 25-27th on Zoom

Yom Kippur | October 4-5th on Zoom

The central message of Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur:

We can heal, repair, and transform ourselves, our society, and the life support system of planet earth.

The High Holidays offer us a time for deep, honest self-reflection. In what ways have we manifested our highest spiritual selves, both in our personal lives and in working to build a society which embodies justice, love, caring for the stranger, the powerless, the poor, the hungry, homeless, refugees, and those seeking to be respected and cared for? What have we done to protect the life-support system of the planet? Did we join with others who sought to make fundamental changes in the systems which reward selfishness and cynicism? The High Holy Days offer a structure for this self-reflection so we can become more fully embodied sparks of divine light and love. It requires that we actually engage in teshuva, transformation, and change. We are called to take responsibility for the ways in which we have treated others in less than kind ways, whether in our actions towards other individuals or in the ways in which we engage in our larger society. Where did we miss the mark and what can we do differently going forward?

Cat Zavis, Rabbi Michael Lerner, and Ami Goodman will lead us through much of the traditional high holiday prayers. And they will share reflections on God, and the connection between Jewish theology and the pressing political, social, and economic issues of our time. Ami Goodman will provide musical inspiration.”

With Bill McKibben, Letty Cottin Pogrebin, Noam Chomsky, and Cecelia Wambach

“Besides our inner transformation, we will also address:

  • The Accelerating Environmental Crisis
  • The Real Danger of Nuclear War
  • Increasing Poverty & Homelessness
  • The Criminalizing of Abortion
  • Capitalism & Selfishness
  • Israeli Assault on Palestinians
  • The Growth of Fascism and Hatred of Jews

The Hasidim taught that in difficult times like these we must let our joy fill the air, and insisted that the High Holy Days must be filled with music, dance, and love. You’ll find this energy at Beyt Tikkun services!!! ”

The After Path: A Samhain Spirit Workshop with Pam Grossman, Thursday, October 27, 2022, 8 PM–10 PM US/Eastern, Online.

“This Samhain, learn how to honor the spirits in this online workshop led by author and witch, Pam Grossman.”

This class will be recorded, and available for attendees to rewatch for one month.

The format will be webinar style with only Pam's screen visible, unless she calls for volunteering participants who may choose to turn on their audio and/or video when called on.

Due to high demand, there will be no refunds issued within seven days of the scheduled event. Thank you for understanding!

Communing with our beloved dead is possible at any moment, but this spirited season is when many believe the veil between worlds is thinnest, and contact with the otherworld most clear. Samhain, All Hallows Eve, Día de los Muertos, and Fête Gede are but a few of the holy-days celebrated at this time, and they provide moments of contemplation and connection with those we have lost.

In this visually-rich online workshop, Pam Grossman will cover various magical methods of honoring one's ancestors (including biological, chosen, or spiritual), and cover the key components for creating a practice of spirit veneration. Though this class will focus primarily on Samhain traditions, these gestures may be utilized any time throughout the year, whenever one feels called to give thanks, ask for guidance, or simply say hello to those who have crossed over.

Students will come away with everything they need to begin deepening their ancestral connections safely and lovingly – even if they have a complicated relationship with said spirits, or know very little about them. Our familiar spirits can support us, as we can support them!

This workshop is open to all, from the curious newbie to the occult devotee.”
